The women’s qualifying tournament runs from August 24–27, with 128 players competing for 16 places in the main draw.
The 128-player women’s singles main draw begins on August 30, while the championship match is scheduled for September 12 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Tournament Evolution – US Open

• 1887: The first U.S. women’s singles championship is held.
• 1968: The tournament enters the Open Era, allowing professional players to compete alongside amateurs. Virginia Wade wins the first US Open women’s singles title of the Open Era.
• 1973: The US Open becomes the first Grand Slam tournament to award equal prize money.
• 1975: The tournament switches from grass to Har-Tru clay at Forest Hills. Night tennis also makes its Grand Slam debut.
• 1978: The US Open moves from Forest Hills to the newly opened USTA National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows and changes to hard courts.
• 1997: Arthur Ashe Stadium opens as the US Open’s new centre court.
• 2025: The singles tournament expands to 15 competition days, with the main draw beginning on a Sunday for the first time in the Open Era.

US Open 2026 WTA Draw & Bracket

Main Draw

The US Open 2026 women’s singles draw features 128 players competing across seven rounds.

Unlike the 96-player WTA 1000 tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati, there are no first-round byes at a Grand Slam. Every player must therefore win seven matches to become US Open champion.

The field is made up of direct acceptances and replacements, eight wildcards and 16 qualifiers. The initial direct-entry cutoff was No. 102 in the WTA rankings.

The official women’s singles draw was released on August 27. Aryna Sabalenka is the No. 1 seed, followed by Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff. The 16 qualifying positions remain open while the final round of qualifying is completed.

The confirmed seedings differ in several places from the earlier projected list. Most notably, Mirra Andreeva is seeded No. 5, Linda Noskova No. 6, Karolina Muchova No. 7 and Iga Swiatek No. 8. Sara Bejlek enters the seeded field at No. 28, while Donna Vekic is unseeded.

Sabalenka begins her bid for a third consecutive US Open title against Camila Osorio. Rybakina opens against wildcard Thea Frodin, Pegula faces Elena-Gabriela Ruse, Gauff meets Zeynep Sonmez, and Swiatek starts against Xiyu Wang.

One of the most eye-catching first-round matches is an all-wildcard meeting between Venus Williams and Sofia Kenin, two former Grand Slam champions.

The eight main-draw wildcards include three former Grand Slam champions. Venus Williams won the US Open in 2000 and 2001, Sloane Stephens was champion in 2017 and Sofia Kenin won the 2020 Australian Open.

Lee earned her place through the US Open Wild Card Challenge, Brantmeier won the American Collegiate Player Wild Card Playoff and 17-year-old Frodin earned her place by winning the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championship. Jeanjean and Preston received reciprocal French and Australian wildcards respectively.

US Open 2026 Women’s Qualifying Results

The US Open qualifying tournament is considerably larger than qualifying at a regular WTA event.

A total of 128 women compete across three rounds for 16 places in the main draw. A player therefore needs three consecutive victories to qualify for the US Open.

Qualifying runs from Monday, August 24 through Thursday, August 27. All qualifying matches can be attended free during US Open Fan Week with a Fan Access Pass.

Polina Kudermetova is the No. 1 seed in the women’s qualifying draw. Other notable players attempting to qualify include Zheng Qinwen, Bianca Andreescu, Rebecca Marino, Sofia Costoulas, Kristina Liutova, Claire Liu and former world No. 1 junior Jeline Vandromme.

US Open 2026 Women’s Singles 1st Round Results

The opening round contains 64 matches, with all 128 players beginning their main-draw campaigns at this stage.

Unlike Toronto and Cincinnati, nobody receives a bye. Every woman in the draw must win seven matches to become US Open champion.

US Open 2026 Withdrawals

Nine women from the original main-draw entry list have withdrawn as of August 24:

• Jaqueline Cristian — replaced by Darja Vidmanova
• Emma Raducanu — replaced by Anna Blinkova

Victoria Mboko is the highest-ranked confirmed withdrawal. The Canadian has been sidelined by the knee injury she suffered earlier in the summer.

Emma Raducanu, the 2021 champion, will also miss New York because of the stress fracture that has kept her out of the North American hard-court swing.

Elena Rybakina is not on the withdrawal list as of this update. Her participation nevertheless remains worth monitoring following the left-ankle injury that ended her Cincinnati Open campaign.

The women’s and men’s singles champions will each receive $5.5 million, the largest winner’s cheque in tennis history.
A player losing in the first round of the singles main draw will receive $140,000.

The official prize-money breakdown confirms $5.5 million for the champion, $2.8 million for the runner-up, $1.45 million for semifinalists and $780,000 for quarterfinalists.

Grand Slam ranking points are considerably higher than at regular WTA tournaments. The champion receives 2,000 points, compared with 1,000 at a WTA 1000, 500 at a WTA 500 and 250 at a WTA 250.

Aryna Sabalenka defeated Amanda Anisimova in the 2025 women’s singles final to successfully defend her title.

The victory made Sabalenka the first woman since Serena Williams in 2014 to win consecutive US Open singles championships. She now returns in 2026 attempting to complete a three-peat, something no woman has achieved in New York since Williams won from 2012 through 2014.

About the US Open 2026

The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season. The women’s championship dates back to 1887, while the modern US Open entered the Open Era in 1968.

Since 1978, the tournament has been staged at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York, where Arthur Ashe Stadium serves as its centre court. The event is played on outdoor hard courts and has awarded equal prize money to the men’s and women’s competitions since 1973.

The 2026 women’s singles championship starts on August 30 and concludes on September 12. With a 128-player field, seven matches required to win the title, 2,000 ranking points for the champion and a record $5.5 million winner’s prize, it remains the biggest event of the North American hard-court season.
